There are certain elements of fashion design that make them stand out, in the case of Scarlett Smith–the purity of line, the clarity of execution, the luxury of integrity are those indisputable characteristics.
I met Amanda Scarlett-Smith at a fashion event for an emerging San Francisco designer, she mentioned she was a fashion designer as well, and we planned to keep in touch. Serendipitously, we ran into each other several months later on the street. Amanda told me about her Spring/Summer 2015 collection based on the Japanese art of wrapping, and that she was a designer in residence at the Fashion Incubator San Francisco (FiSF). I was extremely intrigued by the concept. I have been been keenly aware of Japanese design and esthetic concepts since studying interior design. We planned for a visit to FiSF.
Seeing the ‘Reflective Tranquility’ collection in person revealed a modern, chic, wearable capsule wardrobe that celebrated a woman’s form with a thoughtful approach that was neither radical nor cliched.
The clothes are timeless, sculptural, and powerful in their understatement, but most of all undeniably unique.
I chose to photograph the strapless dress with winged pockets that can be arranged in several configurations. To underscore the femininity of the dress, I picked one of my favorite motifs in jewelry–the panther.
The sleek cat is a timeless design that can look ostentatious and is not for the minimalist. Yet, I find that the sober lines of the dress that reveal and conceal, and the pavéd rhinestone and enamel and rhinestone double headed bangle combine to create a harmony between sophisticated simplicity and luxe embellishment.
Scarlet Smith’s vision has wet my appetite for exciting things to come. I’ll be watching the arc of this designer’s low key luxury philosophy with sartorial delight.
