Please tell us about Scarlett Smith and your design aesthetic.
Scarlett Smith is a womenswear label created by English fashion designer Amanda Scarlett Smith. The company was launched in September 2014 with her SS15 line Reflective Tranquility. Scarlett Smith develops 2 pret-a-porter collections a year which are manufactured right in the heart of San Francisco.
Inspiration for her designs come from a passion for architectural shapes and sculpture. Exploration is core to the design process and she is fascinated by the endless possibility of fabric and technique to create striking, sophisticated yet clean silhouettes. The beauty of the designs are all in the details, an interesting cut or embellishment that transforms a garment instantly.
Scarlett Smith creates sculptural pieces inspired by the feminine form using innovative techniques to create unique silhouettes and strong shapes that have a powerful femininity.
How did you get started in fashion? What made you decide to become a fashion designer?
I have wanted to be a fashion designer for as long as I can remember. My whole life has been focused on achieving this. I started by making clothes for my dolls from 5 years old and it progressed from there.
From 11 years old it was my dream to attend Central St. Martins to study fashion. I remember the first time I walked through the corridors of St. Martins, it was magical!
How did you become part of Macy’s incubator?
I came across the incubator when I first moved to San Francisco 2 years ago. I attended one of their public programs and had a look around.
A few months later I was lucky enough to meet Jeanne and Marc at a party. Jeanne invited me to apply a few months later and here I am now!
Who is the Scarlett Smith girl/woman?
The Scarlett Smith woman is a possessor of their own style. She is daring, elegant, strong and feminine. A confident woman who demands to look beautiful, refined and accomplished.
What projects are you currently working on?
I have just finished my Spring Summer 2015 collection and am starting to think about Autumn/Winter 2015/16. I have also been collaborating with a great photographer Billy Winters and styling shoots for editorials.
What is the most important factor of making your designs as special and unique as possible?
The collection consists of a selection of wearable separates. The beauty of the designs are all in the details, an interesting cut or embellishment that transforms a garment instantly.
Beautiful, sleek and powerful are my signature.
Working in a 3 dimensional way, I use draping techniques mixed with pattern cutting to produce interesting silhouettes and details to push my work forward in interesting and unusual ways.
When you’re not designing, what are your favorite pastimes?
Most of my time is dedicated to my business right now. In my spare time I hang out with my family and friends, exploring California, art exhibitions and fashion events.
Where does your inspiration come from for your latest collection?
The collection is inspired by Japanese wrapping and packaging. Where the exterior is almost as important as the gift it contains and each carefully considered and precise detail is marked by thoughtfulness and technique, luxuriating in the differences of texture as well as color and pattern.
The collection has a serene and austere beauty. Everything has been reduced to its purest form.
Each detail is important and deliberate. Silhouettes are precise, functional and beautiful.
The color palette is tranquil and harmonious in cool tones of midnight blue, teal, dove grey and silver, creating a calm, reflective mood.
